Field Mill, Sat 27 March 2004
report by John Street

Stags Youth team were unlucky to lose once again after bossing a thrilling fixture at Field Mill on Saturday morning.

Fine approach play, and inter-passing but lacking the final punch in front of goal, was the order of the day.

Stags started well and took the lead when Parks scored with a cross cum shot which somehow found its way into the Seasiders goal, only for the Stags to be pinned back by a slip by the home goalie who let one slip through his hands.

Stags were totally in control and the passing football was a pleasure to watch and created chances for Sleath and Parks to hit good efforts from the edge of the box on target but saved. Lloyd then slipped past two defenders and wriggled into the box but slotted wide of goal. Heron then forced the keeper again to save with a headed effort from a Lloyd corner.

Blackpool though somehow managed to wriggle a goal themselves against the flow of play to get a 2 - 1 lead.

The second half developed with a similar pattern, and Stags came close with Holmes creating a couple of chances on the left hand side, but the strikers not sharp enough to convert.

Eventually Stags created an equaliser when Lloyd and Jones played a good one two which opened the Seasiders defence for Sleath to slot home well for 2 - 2.

However with 15 minutes to go, Blackpool with one of there few attacks created a chance for their full back to fire an un-stoppable shot from the edge of the box to win the game.

This was a cruel blow for the Stags who had bossed the game and played football which was a pleasure to watch through midfield and service to the strikers and credit goes to Youth Team coach Paul Holland and his assistant Ivan Hollet for their encouragement of this.
