YOUTH TEAM BEATEN IN FA YOUTH CUP
27th January 2004 11:09

FA Youth Cup 2nd Round
Notts County 4 Stags Youth 0
Report by John Street at Meadow Lane

Stags Youth Team were hammered out of the FA Youth Cup by local neighbours Notts County last night at Meadow Lane, Nottingham.
In a first 45 minute rout the visitors found themselves looking up at a 4 – 0 deficit with another 45 minutes to be played.
They were robbed of both John-Baptiste and Lloyd from the starting line-up through illness and injury and had Mulligan and Ryles on the bench which left an inexperienced team to challenge the stronger home side.
After the break Stags made more of a fight of the game and matched the home side but never looked like really seriously threatening the home goal and therefore the 4 - 0 deficit stayed intact.

Team: Fenn, Jones D, Woods, Jones A, Holmes, Sleath, Parks, Rennals, Curle T, Heron, Arnold

Subs Used :- Manship for Jones D
Sleath for Zaccarius
Messum for Rennals

NB Decent following from Stags Fans, among a fair home support also to add their coffers to the Save the Magpies Fund - (As football fans also we say, good luck to them!)

Evening Post report:
MAGPIES THUMP MANSFIELD

Notts County's youngsters continued their impressive run of form with a thumping 4-0 win over Mansfield Town in the FA Youth Cup at Meadow Lane last night.

John Gaunt's side powered into a four-goal lead in the first half, before shutting up shop after the break.

It came as suitable revenge over a Stags side that had inflicted their only defeat of the season, with a 3-1 win in the Youth Alliance in August.

Notts have now fired 14 goals in their last three matches, after wins over Shrewsbury Town (4-1) and Wrexham (6-1) took them to the top of the North Central Conference table.

But it could have been worse for the visiting Stags last night.

Kris Nurse put the Magpies ahead with a crisply-taken goal after only two minutes.

By the time Eddie McIntyre had fired in a curling free kick and Mark Sherlock had taken advantage of a defensive mistake, Notts were 3-0 up with only 16 minutes on the clock.

The hero for Mansfield was without a doubt defender Andy Jones.

The Stags skipper cleared no less than three goalbound efforts off the line, with a spectacular double block denying David McGoldrick and Chris Rhodes.

Rhodes wasn't to be denied for long, however.

With four minutes of the first half to play he took advantage of more hesitation in the Stags defence to put the Magpies 4-0 ahead.

And the damage could still have been worse, with Nurse hammering a shot against the bar.

The game was a little flatter after the break, with Notts happy to defend their lead and with Stags rallying well.

But Notts keeper Ali Bacherini still did not have a save to make as Notts continued to dominate.

John Gaunt's side travel to Chester City on Saturday (11am).

NOTTS: Bacherini, Mathers (Christie 83), McIntyre, Wilson, Friars, McGolrick (Leslie 83), Morgan, McFaul, Rhodes, Nurse, Sherlock (Miller 72). Not used: Hubbard, Garner.

MANSFIELD: Fenn, Dominic Jones, Holmes, Rennalls, Andy Jones, Wood, Sleath (Ryalls 79), Parks (Manship 75), Heron, Arnold, Curle. Not used: Mulligan, Zaccaria, Messum.
