YOUTH TEAM CLAIM FIRST POINT
11th April 2003 17:10

Stags Youth 2 Port Vale 2
Mulligan, Lloyd

Report by John Street

Stags collected there first point in the Youth Alliance Merit League in a re-arranged game at Teversal on Friday 11th April.

The Stags who had had 2 tough games against Vale in the regional league earlier in the season and just pipped them for that title, were once again in amongst it for this Merit League Clash.

Port Vale started the game flying and seemed a yard quicker than the Stags in the first 30 minutes and took the lead through sloppy defending from the home side, and went even further ahead when the Stags keeper spilled a left wing cross, to be 2 - 0 down.

However Vale were beggining to show signs that the early bluster had blown out, and when Zaccariah crossed low from the right Mulligan bundled the ball over the line to get Stags back into the game.
Satgs nearly snatched another goal when Lloyd cleverly eluded the Vale defence and his shot beat the keeper but slid just wide of the goal.

After the break the Stags took complete control with with Beardsley and Mulligan coming close to breaking their way through.

With 20 minutes to go however following good holding up play by Mulligan, the ball fell to Lloyd who drilled home from just inside the 18 yard box, to set up a fierce last period.

A collection of corners followed for the Stags with Buxton going close on 3 occasions, but the the ball just wouldnt find its way into the Vale net for a third time, and Stags had to be happy with a draw and there first point in the Merit League.

Overall a good fighting display, and unlucky not to take all three points.

Team :- Coates, Davies,(Jones) Baptiste, Buxton, Ryles, Zaccarhia, (Curle)
Parkes, Carter, Lloyd, Mulligan, Beardsley.
