STAGS BEATEN AND FAIL TO SCORE AGAIN

Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town went down to a 1-0 home defeat for the second home game running, this time to newly-promoted Grimsby Town. The Stags created 9 presentable chances in the first half: Danny Rose, Benning, Green, Mitch Rose, Danny Rose again, then Green twice in a minute cutting in from the left, then Iacovitti and finally Pearce. None of the chances taken, and it was clear that it would probably be costly. In the middle of that and very much against the run of play, Grimsby were ahead on 17 minutes. Bogle played a one-two with Kayden Jackson and broke into the area. As Bogle and Shearer both went for the ball, Bogle was quicker to it than Shearer, nicked it away, going away from goal, and tumbled over Shearer. They are given as penalties every time, and it was here. Clever play from Bogle. A couple of people said to me Bogle was offside as Jackson played the ball to him but he wasn’t. Shearer has to take a large part of the blame as he got his timing wrong on this occasion. Bogle himself converted the resulting penalty. A good performance from Mansfield in the first half with plenty of chances, and despite being a goal down, good applause from the home crowd at the break. The Stags were camped in Grimsby’s half for long spells of the second half, but failed to create so many clearcut chances, with Grimsby often having 9 men behind the ball and crowding the Stags out. Such frustration for Mansfield at the final whistle. Overall, the Stags had 10 corners to Grimsby’s 3, and a host of other free-kicks into the box. But Mansfield are desperately lacking confidence in the final third, too often hesitating and wanting to take an extra touch. The Stags drop into the bottom half of the table, three points outside the play-offs. On to Accrington on Tuesday. The Stags desperately need to find the back of the net, having now failed to score in four league games, plus an EFL Trophy game. The last time the Stags failed to score in 5 league and cup games was 11 months ago.

Mansfield made two changes from the side that got a creditable draw at Hartlepool last week. Oscar Gobern came in for his first start, after coming on as substitute at half time at Hartlepool. He replaced Jamie McGuire. Kevan Hurst came in for CJ Hamilton. Pearce was fit after carrying an injury last week. The Stags lined up in a 4-1-3-2 formation with Gobern in the centre of a midfield 3 with Hurst on his right and Mitch Rose on his left. Chris Clements was a welcome returner to the bench after injury. Pat Hoban was also on the bench for the Stags against the team he played for in last season’s play-off final at Wembley. Grimsby included plenty of players new to the club this season, including Ben Davies at right back who was at Portsmouth last season. Danny Andrew, formerly on loan at Mansfield in 2012, was at left back. Craig Disley was on the bench for Grimsby.

There was a huge police presence. The crowd was smaller than I would have expected had the game kicked off at a sensible time, and there’s no doubt that the ludicrously early kick-off time of 12.15pm, on police advice, kept plenty of Stags fans away who would otherwise have come. And there are two more of these ridiculous kick-offs to come.

It was a sunny lunchtime, but windy. The Stags had the wind behind them in the first half, and Grimsby had it behind them in the second half.

The Stags started on the front foot. On 6 minutes a curling shot from Danny Rose was pushed away by James McKeown. A minute later, Benning fired in a right foot shot from about 24 yards that was just wide of the right post after Hurst’s cross came out to him. Then on 8 minutes, Green forced his way into the area on the right and had a shot that was blocked, it came back to Mitch Rose, whose shot was blocked for a corner. Four efforts inside 2 minutes.

On 10 minutes a free kick for Grimsby. Ben Davies took it, 35 yards out to the left of centre, and Pearson headed well wide.

On 15 minutes, a good move from Mansfield involving Hurst and Green and Hurst’s cross towards Danny Rose, unmarked at the far post, was put behind for a corner. From that corner from the right by Hurst, Danny Rose headed goalwards and it was cleared off the line.

Very much against the run of play, Grimsby were ahead on 17 minutes. Shearer was booked. Pearce was also booked for protesting. Shearer has to take a large part of the blame as he got his timing wrong on this occasion. Bogle himself took the resulting penalty and fired into the right side of the goal as Shearer dived the other way.

Green created two chances for himself in a minute on 20 minutes. Danny Rose won the ball on the halfway line on the left, and Mitch Rose played a ball down the left touchline. Green ran on to it, and with an enormous amount to do, cut inside onto his right foot inside the area and fired a low shot towards the bottom left corner, which McKeown pushed away for a corner. A minute later, Mitch Rose played another fine ball down the left touchline, Green ran on to it again, cut inside again onto his right foot inside the area and fired wide of the right post. Good play from Mitch Rose on both occasions but very good from Green to create a chance each time from wide on the touchline.

On 28 minutes, Summerfield shot from 25 yards, it was going wide, hit Bogle and went further wide.

On 30 minutes, the ball bounced around the Grimsby box as Benning crossed from the left, it floated over a defender and Danny Rose had a free header but it was on him too quickly and he couldn’t direct towards goal. Then on 36 minutes, Hurst crossed from the right, and a defender cleared away from Green. At the other end on 40 minutes, a good move from Grimsby into the Stags box, and Pearce put in a good challenge to clear.

On 41 minutes, Danny Rose sent a speculative effort from 28 yards well wide of the left post. A minute later, good play at the back by Rhys Bennett, the Stags broke forward but Green wasted a cross from the right.

On 45 minutes, two more chances for the Stags. Hurst’s corner from the left was headed by Iacovitti off a defender for another corner. From that corner from the right, Pearce headed wide.

A good performance from Mansfield in the first half with plenty of chances, and despite being a goal down, good applause from the home crowd at the break.

Half time 0-1

On 48 minutes, a high hanging cross from Benning, and Green headed wide. A minute later, Lee Collins gave the ball away in his own half in a dangerous position but the Stags escaped.

CJ Hamilton replaced Gobern on 58 minutes, Gobern put in a promising 45 minutes at Hartlepool, but nothing had gone his way here in a disappointing performance. Mitch Rose moved from the left of midfield to the centre, Hamilton went on to the left.

On 59 minutes, Iacovitti put in a great challenge on Chambers inside the area. A blatant shirt pull on Green in the Grimsby half was not spotted by the officials a minute later.

Hoban replaced Danny Rose on 61 minutes, to come on against his former club.

On 64 minutes, Hurst’s corner was headed well wide by Pearce.

Clements made a welcome return on 65 minutes, replacing Iacovitti. Collins switched to centre half. Clements joined Mitch Rose in the centre of midfield. I was surprised to see Iacovitti sacrificed as he’d played well.

Mansfield were by now camped in Grimsby’s half, with Grimsby content to have 9 men behind the ball.

On 73 minutes, Hurst crossed from the right, Mitch Rose headed straight at the keeper.

A very rare break from Grimsby on 77 minutes as Tuton broke to the edge of the Stags box, and his shot which was going wide deflected off Collins for a corner. From the corner, Shaun Pearson went close for Grimsby heading just wide.

On 79 minutes, a corner from the right, Collins headed back, Pearce headed forward and Green attempted an over head kick but there were too many Grimsby players around and it was a free-kick. Stags were simply getting crowded out. On 84 minutes, Hamilton crossed and McKeown claimed well under pressure. On 86 minutes, Benning’s free kick into the area was knocked on and McKeown claimed well again. On 88 minutes, Benning crossed from the left, Mitch Rose headed at goal, and McKeown held under his bar.

On 89 minutes, Hamilton crossed, Mitch Rose shot wide via a deflection. From the resulting corner, the ball was flying around the area, but eventually a free kick was given.

Such frustration for Mansfield at the final whistle. The Stags had so much possession in the second half but didn’t create as many chances as the first half with Grimsby defending in large numbers, and Mansfield lacking confidence in the final third, too often hesitating and taking an extra touch.

The Stags drop into the bottom half of the table, three points outside the play-offs. On to Accrington on Tuesday. The Stags desperately need to find the back of the net.

FURTHER REFLECTIONS (MY WEEKLY BLOG FOR THE CHAD NEWSPAPER):
Mansfield Town’s worrying recent run of results continued on Saturday. The Stags desperately need to find the back of the net, having now failed to score in four league games, plus an EFL Trophy game. The last time the Stags failed to score in 5 league and cup games was 11 months ago. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to newly-promoted Grimsby Town was the second consecutive 1-0 home defeat. But there was no lack of chances created against Grimsby. In the middle of that and very much against the run of play, Grimsby took the lead from a penalty. Omar Bogle played a one-two with Kayden Jackson and broke into the area. As Bogle and Scott Shearer both went for the ball, Bogle was quicker to it than Shearer, nicked it away, going away from goal, and tumbled over Shearer. They are given as penalties every time, and it was on Saturday. Clever play from Bogle. A couple of people said to me Bogle was offside as Jackson played the ball to him but he wasn’t. Shearer has to take a large part of the blame as he got his timing wrong on this occasion. Bogle converted the resulting penalty. A good performance from Mansfield in the first half with those chances, and despite being a goal down, good applause from the home crowd at the break. Despite the defeat there were some good performances. Mitch Rose was my man of the match, with several good passes and a few efforts on target. It was good to see Chris Clements back from injury as a substitute in the second half, Mansfield have missed him. He wasn’t yet match fit on Saturday’s evidence as you’d expect, but that will have helped and he should be more up to speed for the next game. And the entire defence continued to look solid, as it has all season. The Stags dropped into the bottom half of the table, three points outside the play-offs.

Man of the match: Mitch Rose

Report by: Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Line Up:
(4-1-3-2)
Shearer 5 Has to take a large part of the blame for the penalty as he got his timing wrong on this occasion. Otherwise didn’t have a save to make.
Bennett 7 A couple of pieces of good play. Decent game.
Pearce 7 One very good challenge. Solid.
Iacovitti 7 One great challenge on Chambers. Had a good game, I was surprised he was sacrificed.
Benning 7 Got forward a lot, mixed quality of crosses. Decent game overall.
Collins 6 Did ok. Gave ball away in one dangerous position.
Hurst 6.5 Some good crosses.
Gobern 4 After his promising half at Hartlepool, this was very disappointing as nothing went his way. After a year out, it will take time for him to get match sharp.
M.Rose 7 Good game. Several good passes and a few efforts on target.
D.Rose 6 Header cleared off the line and a curling shot well saved. Needs a goal for confidence.
Green 6 Created two chances for himself with fine play in the first half running down the left, cutting inside and shooting.
Sub Line Up:
Hamilton (for Gobern, 58 mins) - A couple of crosses but we need to see him running at defences and creating chances.
Hoban (for D.Rose, 61 mins) - Won some headers.
Clements (for Iacovitti, 65 mins) - Good to see him back. Not yet match fit on this evidence as you’d expect, but this will have helped and he should be more up to speed on Tuesday.
Subs not used: Jensen, McGuire, Hemmings, Henderson.
Opposition Line Up:
(4-4-2): McKeown; Davies, Danny Collins, Pearson, Andrew; Chambers, Summerfield, Comley, Vose; Jackson (Tuton 69), Bogle (Vernon 90+2). Subs not used: Dean Henderson, Disley, Berrett, Bolarinwa, Boyce.
Referee:
Geoff Eltringham 7 Got the penalty right. The officials missed a few things but generally did well.
