STAGS THROUGH TO PLAY LIVERPOOL ON JOYOUS NIGHT

by Martin Shaw

Mansfield Town deservedly won through to the third round of the FA Cup, and a mouth-watering clash against the mighty Liverpool on January 6th. In a game that was scarily similar to the first game, the Stags were dominant for the first 40 minutes, taking the lead when John Dempster's header hit the post and went in off hapless Lincoln Paul Farman, but out of the blue, and with their first chance, Lincoln equalised just before half time through Adam Smith. Lincoln were on top in the early stages of the second half, just as they had been at Sincil Bank, but the Stags defence stayed rock solid this time, with Dempster and Geohaghon outstanding in central defence, and eventually the Stags wrestled back control. A moment of true high quality won the game for the Stags with a great ball from Clements to Howell, who fed Briscoe with a quality square ball, and Briscoe finished with aplomb. After that Lincoln could barely get the ball into the Stags area such was the dominance of the Stags defence, and the Stags were the clearly deserved winners.

So, bring on ... Hyde. There are four league games to play before Liverpool come to town, and the Stags need to stay 100% focused to continue the good run in the league. Come on Mansfield!

Man of the Match: Anthony Howell

Report by: Martin Shaw

Line Up:
Marriott 7 Great save from Taylor in the second half, and some good punches. Looked in command.
Thompson 5 Bad misjudgment for Lincoln's equaliser. Rightly subbed at half time.
Dempster 7.5 A massive threat in Lincoln's box and could have scored a hat-trick. Did well in defence.
Geohaghon 8 Monumental. Seemed to win every single header that he had a chance of winning.
Beevers 7 Very solid and assured. The left back position is now truly his.
Briscoe 7 Took his goal well, and some great play to set up the double chance in the first half. Had a few shots blocked.
Howell 8 Really good game. Superb composure to set up Briscoe for the second goal. Had to be careful after early booking but handled himself expertly.
Clements 7.5 Very good game overall, though faded in and out a bit. Quality ball that led to the second goal.
Meikle 6 Far too quiet.
Hutchinson 6 One good shot that was very well saved. But too quiet.
Green 6.5 Didn't get as much service as he would have liked. Unlucky with his effort just after Hutchinson's chance in the first half. Worked extremely hard throughout.
Sub Line Up:
Sutton (for Thompson, 46) 7 Defended solidly.
Rhead (for Hutchinson 61) 7 Shored up the defence from Lincoln long throws when the Stags were under the cosh a bit, and created a different threat at the other end. Key substitution that Cox got spot on.
Subs not used: Daniel, Murray, Speight, Wright, Stevenson.
Opposition Line Up:
Paul Farman, Dan Gray, Andrew Boyce, Tom Miller, Peter Gilbert, Gary Mills, Mamadou Fofana, Jake Sheridan, Adam Smith, Alan Power, Jamie Taylor. Subs: Paul Robson, Vadaine Oliver (for Mills 81), Nicky Nicolau, Colin Larkin (for Smith 81), David Morgan, Conner Robinson (for Sheridan 86), Jake Turner.
Referee:
Darren Sheldrake 8 Handled the game well, though not particularly consistent with yellow cards.
