AWFUL STAGS HELD BY MAGNIFICENT MATLOCK

Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium

Mansfield Town and Matlock Town, from the Northern Premier League, two leagues below Mansfield, will have to replay in their FA Trophy Round 1 tie, after a terrible display from the Stags against superb Matlock, who should have won through but for a magnificent penalty save from Shane Redmond and an even better follow up save. Redmond saved a penalty from McMahon on 7 minutes, and somehow tipped over the follow up from Ashmore. Adam Murray put Mansfield ahead with his first goal since the season before last, following up after Briscoe’s shot had been parried by the keeper. McMahon made amends for his penalty miss by finishing off a fabulous Matlock move to equalise on 38 minutes. Either side could have won it in the second half as Rhead missed a sitter and Matlock sub Grayson had an injury time effort cleared away with Redmond out of his goal. Matlock regularly worried the Mansfield defence and the Stags central defensive pairing of Jones and Geohaghon did not look to be an ideal one due to a lack of pace. Playing Sutton in the centre, as at Macclesfield, gave the central defence more pace. The replay is due to be played on Tuesday at Causeway Lane though the pitch is partially under water as at Sunday morning and the game must already been in serious doubt.

Mansfield made just one change from the side that played so well at Macclesfield, as Geohaghon returned from suspension, in place of the rested Beevers. Sutton moved from centre half to left back.

Mansfield came close on 3 minutes when Adam Murray fired just wide, with the aid of a deflection, after a good move. Shane Redmond got a boot in his face on 5 minutes and the referee didn’t even have a word with the Matlock player.

John Thompson gifted Matlock a penalty on 7 minutes. Thompson tried to play the ball away from danger and was robbed by McDonald. Thompson brought the striker down and it was a clear penalty. Redmond saved the penalty from McMahon diving to his right, and brilliantly tipped over the follow up shot from Ashmore.

Redmond was called into action again on 14 minutes when he made a fine save after McDonald was through on the right. At the other end, Matt Green went close when his shot was deflected just wide of the left post. On 23 minutes, Thompson cleared Harcourt’s cross-come-shot.

Adam Murray put Mansfield ahead on 25 minutes, following up after Briscoe’s left footed piledriver from outside the box had been parried by the keeper. Matlock had been the better side and it was rather unjust against the lower league side.

On 32 minutes, Briscoe had a low shot from a tight angle which was well saved.

Matlock were deservedly level on 38 minutes as McMahon made amends for his penalty miss by finishing off a fabulous move. It was a wonderful passing move that would have graced the football league, never mind the Northern Premier League.

Meikle’s cross-come-shot flashed across the goal on 40 minutes. Then a minute later, a good one-two between Murray and Green came to nothing.

Matlock had been the better side in the opening half and played a quality of football belying their status in the football pyramid.

Half time 1-1

FULL REPORT TO FOLLOW

Man of the match: Shane Redmond

Report by: Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium

Line Up:
Redmond 8 Wonderful penalty save and even better follow up save. One or two other good saves.
Thompson 5 Dreadful error to concede the penalty.
Jones 5 Central defensive pairing was exposed for lack of pace.
Geohaghon 5 As Jones. Long throws were not sent in with the same low trajectory and venom as against Luton, possibly because of the wet ball.
Sutton 6 Did ok.
Briscoe 5.5 Good shot that led to the goal. Strangely went for a weak shot with his right foot in the second half when he should have belted it left footed.
Murray 5.5 Did well to score his first goal since the season before last. Decent first half, poor in the second. Abandoned his role in front of the back four that he played so successfully at Macclesfield in favour of a more attacking role as lower league opposition. The defence was left exposed a few times.
Clements 6 Tried to create things, without much success.
Meikle 5 One or two teasing runs but created little.
Hutchinson 6 Tried to make things happen.
Green 5.5 Quiet, and got little service.
Sub Line Up:
Wright (for Meikle, 61) - Didn’t get into the game at all.
Speight (for Green, 66) - Livened things up a bit.
Rhead (for Hutchinson, 73) - Poor. Missed a glorious chance to win it on 87 minutes.
Subs not used: Howell, Daniel.
Opposition Line Up:
Kennedy; Harcourt, Gaughan (Grayson 21), Yates, Roe; Lukic, Cotton (Leesley 90+4), Ashmore; McDonald, McMahon, Davis. Subs not used: Dennis, Travis, Leese.
Referee:
Chris Kavanagh (Ashton-under-Lyme) 7 Good game.
