Mansfield lined up in what looked like a 4-2-3-1 formation with Edwards at left back in place of Riley.

Only 2 minutes in, Mansfield went behind due to very poor defending from Edwards who let McReady have time to put in a good cross which was headed back from the far post towards Bridge-Wilkinson who had a free header from 6 yards out with Sutton and Dempster nowhere to be seen. Mansfield kept 'hoofing' it up field but it kept coming stright back as per usual this season. Stags had their first chance on 5 mins when Smith cut in from the left but his shot was high and wide. On 10 min O'Neill put a good cross into the box which seemed to bounce straight off Green and the keeper caught easily. Some comical defending by Dempster and Sutton which neither could control the ball before it was picked up by a Darlo player who was then fouled.

Mansfield pulled a goal back on 14 though, after a good free kick by O'Neill was headed in by Dempster unmarked at the back post.

Mansfield should then have had a penalty as the ball seemed to hit a Darlo hand but the appeals were in vain. Dyer played a decent pass to Hutchinson just outside the penalty area but he was cynically brought down. The free kick taken by O'Neill whose shot was just wide. After about 5 mins of good football Mansfiled went back to just 'hoofing' it up again. On 36 the ball fell to Murray on the penalty spot who just seemed to fall over and the ball was cleared. Edwards was again out of position on 40 as a long ball falls to Ramshaw just inside the penalty area but despite being clear, his shot was high and wide.

Mansfield went in front on 43 as the ball fell to Green in the area who blasted it in the net.

Seconds later Murray recieved the ball in the area marked by 3 defenders but turned brilliantly but the ball came back off the post into the arms of the keeper.

Half time 2-1

Briscoe came on for Hutchinson at ht and played on the right wing with Dyer moving up front. Briscoe, Dyer and Green looked really impressive with Dyer knocking it to Briscoe who put in some quality crosses. Briscoe played a quality ball for Green to run onto but the Darlo keeper just got there and clattered into Green, but for some reason Darlington got the free kick.

Green put Mansfield 3-1 up on 70 with a good bit of skill in the box before blasting it into the net.

But a minute later the Quakers should have pulled a goal back as Bowman, unmarked at the far post, guided a completely free header wide of the target from three yards from Bagnall’s pinpoint cross from the right.

Meikle then came on for Smith.

More bad defending as McReady was allowed to run and run right through Sutton and Dempster before putting the ball in the net from 12 yards out.

Green was then upended in the box before dusting himself down to score the penalty to make it a hat trick and 21 for the season.

Stags started playing some of the best football this season with Briscoe and Green at the centre of everything.

Then on 86, Briscoe got his well-earned goal to make it 5-2. He received the ball inside the area before unleasing his shot into the roof of the net before going crazy in celebration.

Rhead then came on for Dyer for the final couple of minutes.

It was a poor first half and Mansfield were lucky to be in front but by playing 4-4-2 in the second half with Briscoe on the wing and Dyer up front was just to much for an inexperianced Darlington side to handle. Briscoe must start on Saturday and Dyer must play up front. Bring on Tamworth.
