Jack Richardson at Field Mill

On the back of their biggest win in 81 years, 5-0 away at Histon, Mansfield were back at Field Mill to entertain Altrincham on a very rainy night. The Stags were unchanged from the demolition of Histon and faced an Altrincham side hit by injury.

The Stags kicked off playing right to left. In the opening minutes the Stags showed the passing football which we have all been waiting for, which worked so well at Histon.

In the 8th minute the first chance came and it fell to the feet of Jon Challinor who was allowed to turn, however his shot lacked accuracy and was put wide of Coburn’s goal. Encouraging start for Mansfield.

Altrincham then showed their first intention to get something out of the game as Chris Denham and Chris Senior combined with a neat one two, however Senior over ran the ball and it went out for a goal kick to the Stags.

In the 13th minute Altrincham had another chance to get forward and penetrate the Mansfield defence, Adam Carden found his way through a few Mansfield players however Scott Garner was there to play it away for a Altrincham corner.

The 18th minute brought another half chance for the Stags, the impressive Garry Mills floated the ball into Kyle Perry who was 20 yards out, he managed to flick his header behind the Altrincham defence where Jon Challinor found himself 1 on 1 however Coburn beat him to it.

24th minute, Mansfield create their first real scoring opportunity, Nicholas played a ball into the feet of Kyle Perry who found himself 30 yards out, however his ambitious shot sailed over the bar.

Then followed a few minutes of Mansfield pressure which finally lead to Challinor found half a yard to allow him to cross for Kyle Perry, however his header lacked accuracy and went over the bar.

35th minute, Altrincham created their 2nd good move of the game, a long searching ball found former stag Mcaliskey who won his header which found Chris Senior however Gary Silk was there to dispossess him, 4-5-1 was not working for Altrincham.

38th minute, Louis Briscoe’s mazy run into the Altrincham 18 yard box was pulled back to Gary Silk who blazed over from 12 yards.

Half time 0-0

Both teams started the 2nd half with no changes and it was Altrincham who begun the 2nd half the stronger, a weak clearance by Brough however Chris Denham’s volley lacked power and didn’t trouble Marriott in the Mansfield goal.

49th minute, Free kick to Altrincham floated in by Adam Carden, Chris Denham won the header however it looped over the bar.
58th minute, the ball was played into the channels where the architect was able to lay the ball back to Briscoe who then put in a pacy cross which nearly found the head of Perry however Rob Williams, the Altrincham defender beat him to it and cleared for a throw in.

70th min GOAL (Altrincham)
Altrincham corner from the left, played deep towards the back post where Chris Senior was allowed to control and cross back across goal where Greg Young rose to head home to give Altrincham an unlikely opener.

SUB – Perry off, Shaw on 70th min

70thmin brought the first change from David Holdsworth Jon Shaw replacing Kyle Perry up front.

SUB – Mckaliskey off, Welch on 71st min

SUB – Challinor off, Speight on 72nd min

75th minute, corner from the left crossed deep from Andy Burgess however Scott Garner failed to direct his header goal wards. A minute later an attacking throw in from Gary Silk found the feet of Sturrock who found space to play a pass back to Mills who’s cross found the head of Louis Briscoe, again a Mansfield player could not direct their header goal wards, it remained 1-0.

77th min, Jake Speight received the ball from the architect Sturrock and found space to turn Welch and unleash a shot, however his shot lacked power and trickled through to Coburn.

3minutes later another good passing move from the Stags led to another Speight effort, Sturrock again was the provider, again Speight could not beat Coburn as his shot was high of the right upright.

SUB – Briscoe off, Nix on 83rd min
84th min a quick free kick from Garry Mills found the feet of Speight at the edge of the area, Speight’s cross rebounded off Young for a Mansfield corner. The corner was taking from the right from Burgess again it was deep, Andy Nicholas who was forward from right back took the ball down and fired low across goal through a crowd off bodies, Coburn did well to hold on.

85th min, After more good work from Speight, the ball was laid back to Kyle Nix 20 yards out however his volley flew over the bar, still no breakthrough for the Stags.

89th min, Another cross from Burgess, well headed away by Welch for a Mansfield corner, Burgess came over to take the corner, which found it’s way into the 6 yard box, however the referee saw a Mansfield hand make contact with the ball and awarded the vistitors a free kick.

90 minutes up, 4 added minutes.

SUB – Denham off, Little on 90th min.

94th min, GOAL 1-1
Ball on the right hand side of the Altrincham penalty area, Nicholas managing to drive it back across goal low and hard, the ball taking a deflection to cause chaos in the Altrincham area, Jake Speight the benefit who salvaged a point for Mansfield acrobatically from 6 yards out.
