Below par Mansfield Town were swept away by a rampant York City side that was on a fabulous run of 9 wins and a draw from 10 games. The Blue Square Premier's top scorer Richard Brodie was too hot for the Stags to handle, scoring the first following an uncharacteristic Alan Marriott error, then winning a penalty after muscling past Luke Jones with Jones being sent off in the process. Brodie converted the penalty himself, and then superbly set up substitute Michael Gash for the third. A bad day for the Stags who dropped out of the play-off zone and not much reward for the fabulous 642 travelling fans, but a wonderful day for York who were rewarded for the excellent work of their fans clearing the pitch of deep snow in the morning. Mansfield made three changes as in came Gary Silk, Luke Jones and Kyle Perry. Michael Brough moved from defence to midfield. Rob Duffy moved to the bench after illness, Ollie Hotchkiss also dropped to the bench, while Briscoe dropped out of the 16. Challinor started up front alongside Perry. Duffy and Speight, on the bench, were both on antibiotics. York included Luke Graham, on loan from Mansfield - strange that he was allowed to play. Inside the first minute, a good move for the Stags as Morris and Burgess were involved, before Challinor crossed low from the left and the ball was cleared to Brough on the edge of the box who fired a powerful shot just over the bar. On 7 minutes, Garner's backpass was a bit short for Marriott. Marriott came out for it and got there at the same time as Rankine. Marriott seemed to take the ball outside the box with his hands, but Rankine had fouled him, and the referee made a good decision to award a foul to the Stags. On 8 minutes, a great ball from Burgess which was headed wide by Perry under considerable pressure from a defender. The Stags had started very well, with Burgess looking in great form. On 16 minutes, great defending from Silk as he headed over his own bar from a dangerous Alex Lawless cross after Brodie had done superbly to keep the ball in play with a backheel. Then Lawless pulled a 20 yard shot wide after the Stags defence stood off him. This was a risky business as Lawless had fired a superb goal from 20 yards against us when playing for Forest Green last season. But it was 1-0 to York on 21 minutes. A cross came in from the left, Marriott came for the ball but was nowhere near it, the ball was headed goalwards, I think it hit Heckingbottom, and finally Brodie headed it into the empty net. It was a desperate moment for Marriott and for the Stags. Moments later, a Marriott was rooted to his line as a corner from the left came into the Stags six-yard box. The ball was cleared but it highlighted that Marriott’s confidence had momentarily taken a massive dent. York were on top for 20 minutes or so after the goal as Mackin and Lawless sent efforts over the bar. The Stags came back into it in the final 5 minutes of the half giving increased optimism for the second half. In stoppage time, Heckingbottom’s low free kick into the York box found Morris, but he swung a leg and missed and the ball was cleared. Half time 1-0 Holdsworth made two changes at the start of the second half. Williams and Hotchkiss replaced Morris and Brough. But disaster struck within a minute. Brodie muscled his way past Jones who had made the mistake of losing possession, and as Brodie got into the box, Jones brought Brodie down from behind. It was a clear penalty and a clear red card. Brodie took the penalty himself firing powerfully left footed into the left corner of the net. Marriott made a fine attempt to stop it but couldn’t quite reach it. Stags moved Somner back into central defence, and Challinor back to midfield, going to a 4-4-1 formation. On 53 minutes, Brodie turned and crossed superbly from the left with Rankine somehow missing the ball in the middle. Mansfield had a rare chance on 64 minutes as Burgess fired over. On 67 minutes, Speight came on for Burgess. I was surprised that it wasn’t Challinor who was replaced. Silk brought down the fantastic Brodie on 71 minutes. Rankine's low free kick was well saved by Marriott. At last the Stags had a decent passage on play on 74 minutes as a Williams corner was cleared from almost the goal-line and then on 77 minutes following more good play, Williams’s cross-shot was just wide of the right post. But these were isolated moments for Mansfield as York were completely in charge and it was 3-0 on 81 minutes. Brodie did superbly to get past several defenders, cutting in from the left, across the edge of the box, before squaring to former Ebbsfleet striker Gash, only just on as a substitute, who fired low past Marriot into the bottom left corner of the net from the 18 yards. On 85 minutes it was nearly 4-0. Brodie cut inside Silk selling him a dummy, and fired powerfully goalwards. It seemed to hit a couple of players along the way, one of which was Gash, before Heckingbottom cleared it off the line. On 86 minutes, Silk took a decent free kick for the Stags into the York box, but Perry miscued and the chance of a consolation was gone. Man of the match: Gary Silk |

Marriott 5 Uncharacteristic error for first goal, then moments later showed lack of confidence not coming for corner. One good save in second half and nearly saved penalty.
Silk 7 Pick of a poor defence. Several good clearing headers. Jones 4 Bad mistake to concede penalty and get himself sent off, from which we couldn't recover. Garner 5 Poor. Heckingbottom 4 Kept showing poor control. Looked awful. Morris 4 Dreadful first half. Subbed at half time. Somner 5 Uncharacteristically wimped out of a first half challenge which was surprising. Not at his best. Did acceptably well at centre half after the sending off. Brough 6 Shot just over the bar in the first minute. Subbed at half time. Burgess 6 Started really well, with good touches and some good crosses. Didn't get the ball enough after that. Challinor 4 Attacking role in first half, midfield in second half. Played very poorly. Perry 6.5 Worked very hard, won a few headers. Kept going throughout. |
