STAGS WIN AWAY AT HIGH FLYING SALISBURY
Martin Shaw at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium Mansfield Town bounced back from defeat at Luton to win 1-0 at leaders Salisbury, and earn the first away win since March. The win came courtesy of Kyle Perry’s blast from 14 yards off the underside of the crossbar on 67 minutes, after Daryl Clare’s shot had been saved as had Louis Briscoe’s follow-up. The Stags had a heart-stopping moments in the 94th minute when Matt Tubbs fired wide with an empty net from 20 yards. The Stags were unchanged from the side that lost at Luton. Salisbury included former Stags Darrell Clarke as captain, and James Bittner in goal who was so impressive against the Stags last season. The game was played in decent weather with occasiobnal sunshone but on a pitch with surprisingly long grass. After 5 minutes, Williams’ free kick from 30 yards out on the left found Jones who got a head on it but it looped up in the air and was easy for the keeper. It was an end to end start and on 10 minutes, Sinclair’s cross was headed goalwards by Tubbs but was easily saved by Marriott. Two minutes later, Tubbs shot from 35 yards, it bounced awkwardly for Marriott but was still comfortably saved. Then two minutes after that, from Clohessy’s cross, Tubbs got in an angled header which Marriott saved superbly diving to his right. Clohessy's foul on Perry gave Stags a free kick 20 yards out on the right on 18 minutes. Nix wasted it as he over-hit the ball for a goal-kick. On 20 minutes, Williams put in a good cross from the left and found Duffy but the big striker couldn’t get a good connection on it. On 23 minutes, a cross from the left from Spencer, and Garner allowed Tubbs to get in front of him but Tubbs completely messed up his shot at goal - a bad miss. A minute later, shambolic defending from Mansfield as Garner needlessly put the ball into touch with no-one within 25 yards of him. Poor communication amongst the Mansfield back line. Salisbury had been on top during the first 25 minutes and it needed a spark from Mansfield to get them going. It arrived on 26 minutes with a great run from Briscoe all the way to the edge of the box followed by a shot just over the bar. Mansfield came so close to taking the lead on 29 minutes. A corner from Nix from the right was powerfully headed goalwards by Somner. Keeper Bittner made a superb save at close range, parrying the ball straight out to Kyle Perry. Perry was possibly slightly off balance and headed the ball just wide of the right post with the keeper beaten. A great run by Nix on 34 minutes but he was brought down, right on the edge of the box. Perry took the free kick and got it on target but it was straight at the keeper. The Stags came even nearer to taking the lead on 43 minutes. Perry did well to create a shooting position 22 yards from goal and his curling left foot shot seemed to be heading for the right bottom corner of the net but keeper Bittner produced an outstanding save diving to his left. An entertaining first half with Salisbury on top for the opening 25 minutes but the Stags ending the half on top and only kept out by some fine goalkeeping. Half time 0-0 Salisbury nearly took the lead in the first minute of the second half. Williams gave the ball away in an attacking position, Salisbury broke quickly and Sinclair on the right found Flood on the left. Flood flicked a first time shot just over the angle of bar and post from 20 yards with Marriott beaten all ends up. On 49 minutes, Williams cut in from the left hand side and his shot from 20 yards was well saved by Bittner. On 53 minutes, Armstrong’s free kick from the halfway line was headed down inside the box by Perry but Duffy scuffed his effort. Speight replaced Williams on 56 minutes and immediately moved to the right with Briscoe moving to the left. The home side appealed for a penalty on 64 minutes. Tubbs was through on goal but as he was about to shoot, he seemed to tread on the ball and went down. Tubbs appealed for the penalty, which was actually ridiculous and fortunately the referee also thought it was ridiculous. On 65 minutes, great trickery from Briscoe in the box and his cross was cleared for a corner. Clare replaced Duffy on 66 minutes and within a minute, the Stags were in front. A ball fell to Clare on the edge of the box on the right, and his first time volley left footed was heading for the left corner of the net but Bittner pulled off another brilliant save diving to his right and palming the ball as far as Briscoe. Briscoe’s shot was also blocked but came back to Perry who smashed the ball left footed into the net off the underside of the bar. Perry was booked for his celebrations after high-fiving the Stags fans behind the goal, the referee apparently feeling that this could have led to the brick wall falling over. Good play by Speight on 71 minutes who found Silk whose cross was caught by Bittner. On 77 minutes, a cross from Nix on the right which Perry headed across goal, but Bittner easily saved Garner's header. Briscoe showed his defending qualities on 81 minutes with a great tackle. On 84 minutes, Briscoe was replaced by Istead who was straight into the action feeding Speight on the left. Speight cut inside and blasted a great shot just over the bar. On 88 minutes, the home side appealed for a penalty as Silk and Tubbs went down in the area but nothing was given. The Stags were now winding the clock down efficiently and even left 5 player back for a corner on 90 minutes. Four minutes of stoppage time were added and they had already been played when the Stags got a massive let off. Salisbury sub Glover raced after a through ball but was beaten to it as it bounced on the edge of the box by Marriott who headed clear. The ball ran out only as far as Tubbs 25 yards out. With the keeper out of his area, Tubbs effectively had an empty net to aim at and lifted the ball over Marriott but thankfully hooked his shot wide of the right post. So a great win for the Stags. Six points from three games is a good start. Now we have Barrow coming on Tuesday. Let’s hope we can bury them after the disappointment of the draw near the end of least season. Come on Mansfield! Silk 7 Good return to the side. Some good defending, and some good breaks forward. Jones 7 No-nonsense defending. Garner 6 Defended ok. Tough game against Tubbs. One poor piece of play needlessly playing into touch. Armstrong 7 Defended solidly. Distribution improved from Tuesday. Briscoe 7 A couple of fine runs, and some good tackling back, like at Luton. Somner 7 Strong tackling, did well in midfield. Nix 6 One great run, but not at his best. Williams 6 Did ok. Perry 7 Goal was a reward for hard work. One great effort in the first half that was brilliantly saved. Duffy 6 Did ok, but not really his day. |
