Football Returns To Field Mill We've all be waiting for football to return to Field Mill, so we try and extend our unbeaten home record under David Holdsworth. Championship side Leicester city would be the first to try and end our fantastic run! The weather didn't make Field Mill very inviting, the rain flowing very quickly down the car park, via my shoes into the drains on Quarry Lane, as I entered the ground the rain was slowing down and the whole ground gave a fantastic round of applause for former steward James Sheppard. Wearing the new away kit, Blue & White stripes with black shorts and socks, the Stags kicked off attacking the away end. Both teams enjoyed spells of early pressure with good passing moves down both flanks, Leicester got the first chance on goal after around 8 minutes with an attack down the left, their tricky winger cutting inside Craig Armstrong and applying a finish which ended up over the roof of the Quarry Lane end. Leicester enjoyed a decent five minute spell, attacking down the left, Craig Armstrong did well, anything he didn't get was swept up by captain for the night Scott Garner & Luke Graham respectively. After a spell of balanced passing, Leicester again began to dominate but the Stags refused to buckle as everyone including Gary Mills carried out there defensive duties. After a corner conceded by Mills, Stags broke down the left hand side, Craig Armstrong and club captain Ryan Williams linking up well, with Jon D'Laryea getting away Stags' first shot on goal, which was well saved by the visiting keeper. Leicester attacked with long balls over the top, centre back pairing Garner & Graham swept up well, with Keeper Marriott keeping his defensive in order. Both sides were enjoying good momentum down both flanks, Louis “The tank” Briscoe impressing with good strong runs, linking up well with Scott Gardner, Gary Mills & Ryan Williams. Both sides had set pieces which ultimately came to nothing, both defences dealing well with opposition pressure. With about five minutes left in the first half, tricky winger Williams tearing down the left wing, crossing deep for Briscoe, who manages to keep Stags in control. A free kick deep inside the opposition half, taken by Williams, Briscoe gets in a power shot which was well blocked. After one minute added time the half ended 0-0. Hal time 0-0 Leicester kick off and Stags win possession quickly and begin to dominate with Williams and Briscoe giving the full backs a tough time, often beating them and putting in dangerous crosses, which strikers Daryl Clare and Kyle Perry failing to take advantage. Eventually the possession swing back in Leicester's favour, after beating Scott Gardner at right back, Leicester forced stags keeper Marriott into a double save, Leicester's third effort cleared off the line by Gardner who did well to recover. Stags regained their composure after a rallying call from captain Garner, Mills took hold in midfield and Stags had the ball in the net in the 51st minute, Daryl Clare netting after a super Williams cross from the right- the linesman however had other ideas and the score remained 0-0. Both teams continued to worry each other, Stags the more impressive with Briscoe, and Williams the real eye openers. The opposition had a perfect chance to get a goal ahead with a free kick near the edge of the area, unfortunately for them they beat our four man wall but struck well over. Long range shooting would prove to be all Leicester could get, Mansfield's defence really on top of there game. Shortly after being announced sponsor man of the match, Louis Briscoe again tore down the right and troubled the keeper with a powerful shot. The final whistle goes with Stags home record still intact. The weather may have been poor, the result positive but slightly bland, but on the bright side, football is back at field mill. Man of the match: Scott Garner. Closely contested between Garner & Briscoe, Louis “the tank” Briscoe tore down the wing all evening where as Garner read the game well, won 90% of everything and was a real leader, showing his former club what could have been. Worked well with Luke Graham and looked at ease, for this reason Scott Garner gets my man of the match award. Sorry Louis, if I could give it two players I would! |
