The Stags started their pre-season campaign for what will hopefully be a successful 2009/2010 season with a trip to the Newport Stadium to take on Newport County in a match that was billed as the 'Battle of the Holdsworths' as Newport are managed by Stags boss David's twin brother Dean.

The Stags started with a 4-3-1-2 formation with Silk, Jones, Garner and Armstrong at the back. Somner and Mills in front with Nix just in front of them. The front three were Briscoe on the right, Perry on the left and captain for the day Rob Duffy in the middle.

Mansfield wore last season's all white away kit and after some good early defending from Jones, Nix went down in the area after only four minutes, but half-hearted penalty appeals were waved away. Briscoe then had a chance to shoot, but tried to pick out a pass instead and the opportunity was gone.

Duffy was substituted in the tenth minute with a thigh strain and was taken off as a precaution, to be replaced by trialist Jason Bradley. Mills took over the captain's armband. (I think he should have it for the season).

Newport's first real chance saw a dangerous free-kick by Danny Rose headed wide by captain Aaron Cook. Perry then flicked on a long ball, but Bradley was unable to find a finish.

After a good throw by Silk, Nix smacked the ball against the crossbar with the keeper beaten in the 18th minute. Ten minutes later after a lay-off by Bradley, a powerful strike by Nix was deflected wide but as he shot he was challenged and went down in some pain. After some treatment on the pitch he was carried off with a serious looking injury. After being taken off the pitch his leg was put in a brace before being stretchered off. Let's hope it's not as bad as it looked. (After just reading mansfieldtown.net it looks like he has bruised his left metatarsal). Ryan Williams replaced him. This seemed to unsettle Mansfield and Sam Foley came close with a free-kick as the tackles were flying in from both sides.

The Stags though took the lead on 43 minutes when after a fine tackle by Silk, he found Mills whose excellent ball over the top to Perry saw him fire home with a fine first time finish - an excellent goal.

Less than a minute later a fine ball by Williams saw Perry in an identical position but this time his effort was saved by keeper Glyn Thompson (ex-Mansfield).

Somner brought down Kris Leek right on half-time and from the resultant free-kick Rose struck the crossbar in the last action of the first half.

Half-time : 0 - 1

After an early Perry header was easily saved, the Stags doubled their lead in the 48th minute. After good play by Somner and Perry, Silk surged into the area and was fouled for a penalty. Perry stepped up with an excellent finish into the bottom corner of the net.

The Stags next chance came after an excellent tackle by Mills, who passed to Perry who passed onto Bradley and he crossed for Somner to hit just wide. Bradley and Williams then combined well on a couple of occasions but Thompson saved well. Briscoe was brought down after a powerful run and from the resultant free-kick Jones flicked on and Bradley's header was tipped round the post.

Gardner and D'Laryea replaced Silk and Somner in the 56th minute.

A good effort from Foley was well saved by Marriott a minute later, before Briscoe fired well over after a mistake by Ali Gibb.

Clare replaced Perry on 60 minutes.

Gardner was booked in the 63rd minute after a very late lunge on Takumi Ake and was lucky it was only a friendly. Gardner redeemed himself a couple of minutes later with a fantastic last ditch tackle on Scott Armitage after a mistake by Jones.

Good interplay between Bradley and Clare, saw Williams set up Mills to fire wide. Gardner conceded the first corner of the game in the 67th minute but it came to nothing.

Heckingbottom replaced Armstrong in the 70th minute and Graham came on for Garner in the 72nd minute. After a good tackle by Gardner a blatant foul was committed on Williams but no free-kick was given. Just minutes later the same player (Josh Hartridge) put in a poor tackle on Williams and this time was booked. Mills let him know he was less than impressed!

A class flick by Clare into Briscoe's path and his cross saw Bradley try to do a Maradona and put the ball in with his hand. The final Stags substitution saw Sandercombe replace Marriott in the 82nd minute.

A fine ball by Mills in the 87th minute put Bradley one on one but his soft finish was straight at Thompson. Bradley then headed wide before two late Newport corners came to nothing as the Stags held out for the victory.

Overall the Stags put in a professional performance and were deserved winners.

Full-time : 0 - 2
