AWFUL STAGS BEATEN AT HOME BY STANLEY

A dreadful second half performance from Mansfield condemned them to a first home defeat and first goals conceded at home since 2nd October. Once the Stags went behind to a goal that should have been given offside, there was no way back. Indeed the Stags have lost every single game this season in which they have gone behind, apart from the opening day draw at Brentford. A truly abysmal statistic of a side lacking any guts. Following the euphoria of the Boxing Day win over Peterborough, the Stags made just one change with Stephen Dawson suspended, Jake Buxton returning from injury, and Gareth Jelleyman moving from central defence into midfield. In difficult conditions with a swirling wind, the first half was an even affair with chances few and far between. The one bright spot was a triple goal chance on 42 minutes. Arnold brilliantly beat two players on the byeline before cutting in and having a shot saved, the rebound was met a header by D'Laryea that was blocked and Hamshaw fired the rebound over the bar from 3 yards. Earlier on in the half, on 4 minutes Mickey Boulding was through in a 1-on-1 but a bit wide on the left and keeper Dunbavin parried his shot wide. On 7 minutes, Roscoe D’Sane was through and Dan Martin cleared over his own bar. On 19 minutes, D’Sane had a powerful shot on the turn straight at Muggleton. Then Mickey Boulding tried a toe-poke but Dunbavin saved easily. Early in the second half came a key moment in the game when Jelleyman had to go off injured. Jelleyman had played in central midfield and had done well. After he went off the Stags were completely overrun in midfield as Hamshaw moved into the middle, and Accrington got on top as the rain lashed down. On 54 minutes, Arnold tried a snapshot just over the bar. Muggleton made three good saves, one from Craney and one from Mullin both of whom will be leaving Stanley soon, and it was no surprise when Stanley took the lead on 75 minutes. However it appeared to be clearly offside. Harris drilled in a low shot from the right of the box which Muggleton saved but fell straight to Mullin who put the ball in the net from two yards. But Mullin was yards offside, and Muggleton was booked for remonstrating with the ref. Even the Accrington media and manager agreed it was offside. Nevertheless the goal was allowed to stand and it was the first goal the Stags had let in at home in just short of 9 hours. The Stags had only one chance to equalise when Mickey Boulding was clean through on 82 minutes but shot into the side netting. Holmes replaced Buxton as the Stags went 3-4-3. But it was the visitors who scored again in stoppage time as Martin McIntosh pulled down Harris for a clear penalty on the edge of the box. McIntosh having already been booked, correctly received a yellow card and was hence sent off, and Andrew Proctor fired past Muggleton to seal the win. It was frustrating that the Stags went straight to the other end and scored as Mickey Boulding fed Brown on the left who crossed for Holmes to score into an empty net from 6 yards. It was a desperately disappointing result for the Stags and precisely what they deserved for a terrible second half when they showed no fight at all after Jelleyman was injured. Accrington deserved their win, though it could have been different if the Stags had converted their triple chance in the first half, or Accrington’s first goal had been disallowed as it should have been. Mullins 6 Did ok. McIntosh 6 Defended ok. Buxton 5 Poor, given the run-around by D'Sane. Martin 6 OK. Arnold 5 So poor throughout apart from one sublime piece of skill which signalled a triple chance which the Stags spurned. D'Laryea 5 Not even a shadow of his form from last season. Jelleyman 7 Did well in central midfield and after he went off the Stags surrendered the midfield. Hamshaw 6 Did ok on the wing and sent in some decent corners, but was then hopeless in central midfield. McAliskey 5 First half booking seemed to knock the stuffing out of him. M.Boulding 6 At least created himself a couple of chances, but missed them. |
