The Stags welcomed Blue Square South side Lewes for the first round of this seasons FA Cup. Without several first team players through injury, the Stags side had a youthful look to it, with Rory Boulding chosen to play alongside his brother and leading scorer Michael. Lee Bell, passed fit after a nasty shin injury, stood in at right back with Gareth Jelleyman replacing also injured Nathan Arnold on the left of midfield. Jon D'Laryea started his first match since his return from long term injury.

In blustery conditions the opening ten minutes were pretty much without incident, and though the visitors probably started marginally the better, neither keeper was tested until the tenth minute when a long range Bell free kick was deflected by the wall forcing Lewes keeper Williams into a save low to his right. Just past the quarter hour a ball deep into the Stags area caused confusion, Martin eventually clearing the ball to safety. The game was scrappy with neither side able to master the difficult conditions. However, with their first decent move of the match the Stags took the lead. A few short, sharp passes eventually lead to Rory Boulding being released on the right, his excellent low cross found brother Michael on the far post who tapped home from 6 yards for his 11th goal of the season. This goal gave the Stags the confidence their early play had lacked, Jelleyman tried his luck from 25 yards with his right foot, the ball flying only just wide. On 40 minutes the tie was just about over, Hamshaw created space for himself on the right, slid in a great short pass to Rory Boulding and the young striker fired low past Williams.

Half time 2-0

The opening 25 minutes of the second half were instantly forgettable, with barely an attempt on goal from either side and possession won and given away too frequently for the game to gain any fluency. Indeed, the first incident worthy of note of the second period was a red card. Already booked for a shirt pull in the first half on Michael Boulding, Simpemba committed and almost identical offence. Though not seen by the referee, the Assistant on the far side called the referee over and Simpemba was issued his second yellow card of the afternoon. It was probably the correct decision from the referee. Down to ten men and with time running out, Lewes finally tried to have a go at the home side but this gave the Stags lots of space to attack, with Hamshaw in particular having plenty of time and space on the right. It was from one of these moves on the right that the Stags added a third. Hamshaw swung the ball in from the right, Holmes flicked the ball on and it flew over Williams into the far corner for the young substitutes first goal for the club.

So a surprisingly comfortable afternoon for the Stags who won the game despite not really hitting the form of recent weeks. Injuries to Brown, Arnold and Baptiste certainly disrupted the side and at times their was a lack of cohesion. However, defensively the Stags were solid, Muggleton barely had a save to make and in attack the Boulding brothers looked sharp, particularly when the ball was kept on the floor. Jelleyman had a decent game on the left of midfield, a role he will probably play more often this season and although he looked very rusty, it was great that D'Laryea got a full 90 minutes under his belt. For scoring and setting one up for his brother, my man of the match was Rory Boulding.
