Martin Shaw at Field Mill

Mansfield Town picked up their second win of the season with a 2-0 win over local rivals Notts County at Field Mill, thanks to two second half goals from Michael Boulding. It was the Stags first clean sheet in 18 league games.

The first half was an even affair which swayed one way then the other. Notts County had the better of the opening 10 minutes, then the Stags were on top with a couple of chances from Simon Brown. The best chance of the half came when Hamshaw's corner was powerfully headed goalwards by Johnny Mullins but was cleared off the line.

After a scrappy start to the second half, the match defining moment came on 56 minutes when Hamshaw was needlessly pulled down in the box. It was a clear penalty. Michael Boulding stepped up and fired a penalty low and hard down the middle with Kevin Pilkington diving to his right. After the game Boulding told the media how he took penalty but asked us not to write it down, so we'll honour that!

Just 5 minutes later it was 2-0. Brown did well to win the ball 20 yards from goal, though the defending was sloppy. Brown slipped the ball across the edge of the box to Boulding, who seemed to have taken too long to steady himself before shooting, but his left footed effort was low and hard and under Pilkington. It was not unlike a goal Jason White conceded at Accrington and Pilkington possibly should have stopped it.

The Stags could have added to their lead when Boulding's diving header from Martin's cross was superb and just past the post with Pilkington nowhere. Stags had more chances for Brown and Arnold but in the end 2-0 was enough, and it was a terrific second half showing to overpower Notts and deservedly take the points.
