GUTLESS STAGS FRIED BY CODHEADS
Report by Sean the Mad Stag Hoards of Grimsby Town fans descended on Field Mill today. Most of whom travelled on the 15 buses laid on free of charge by their Chairman. Can you imagine Mr Haslam doing the same for us Stags fans? No, I thought not!! The Codheads were in great voice, constantly chanting “we only sing when we’re fishing”!! It was great to see Stuart Watkiss back at the Mill, in his role as Grimsby Town Assistant Manager to ex-Forest star Alan Buckley, in his third reign as Grimsby Town Manager. The Mriners have hit a good run of late, winning their last 2 games, scoring 10 goals in the process and only conceding 3. So, it was going to be very tough ask for the Stags to get anything out of the game. In came Barry Conlon, back after his 3 games suspension following his needless sending off at Chester, with Simon Brown being dropped to the bench. There also was a welcome return of Danny Reet to the subs bench, at the expense of the talented Rory Boulding Grimsby started much the brighter of the 2 teams & started to boss the midfield from very early on in the game & using the width of the pitch very well. It appeared that the Stags were lining up in a 4-3-3 formation with Mickey Boulding given a free licence to roam across the forward line & from wing to wing. A fast flowing start to the game resulted in Stags winning the first corner in the 4 minute; sadly Hamshaw’s left wing corner came to nothing. The Mariners had the first shot on goal in the 9th minute from 22 yards out, which Jason White dealt with easily. Stags were clearly being out numbered in midfield & were affording Grimsby too much room & space with the ball, which created a lot of chances & unnecessary pressure on our defence. A neat interplay between Hamshaw & Conlon sent Dawson racing through on goal, but keeper Barnes dealt with it easily. On 16 minutes Grimsby won a corner, which was swung into the 6 yard box, where one of their unmarked defenders headed narrowly over the bar. A minute later a quickly taken free kick by Jake Buxton, in his own half looped over the Grimsby defence to Barry Conlon, who volleyed just over the bar from 20 yards out. The first booking of a fast & furious game came in the 19th minute when Nicky Fenton fouled ex-Mariner Gritton, 25 yards from goal. The resulting free kick by Hamshaw fell to Dawson wide on the right of the area. He quickly fired in a wicked low cross that the Mariners defence put out for a corner. The corner came to nothing. By this time Stags were narrowly edging the game & D’Laryea was outstanding in the middle of the park, orchestrating a lot of the attacks on goal. A great ball from D’Laryea sent Conlon free on the right wing, in the 30th minute, he crossed the ball to ex-Grimsby striker Mickey Boulding, who tucked the ball away at the second time of asking. Boulding showed a lot of respect to the Grimsby fans behind the goal by not over-celebrating the goal. Grimsby came right back at the Stags & 2 minutes later forced Jelleyman into a hurried headed clearance across his own penalty area, the ball fell to Bore, who volleyed narrowly wide. In the 35th minute Conlon buried a powerful header past keeper Barnes from a left wing cross, only for it to ruled out for offside, much to the Grimsby fans relieve behind the goal. Grimsby won a corner in the 39th minute; the inswinging corner was expertly punched clear by the assertive Jason White. In 42nd minute I was screaming at Jelleyman, from my seat in Quarry Lane End, to mark the free man at the far post. He heard me, but the left wing cross fell to ex-Magpie Paul Bolland at the far side of the area & he hit the ball first time from a narrow angle, across White & in off the inside of the far post to equalise. This sent the 1338 Codhead fans into raptures. HALFTIME – STAGS 1 CODHEADS 1 Stags started the 2nd half, with a very high tempo & took the game to Grimsby. In the 55th minute after a lot of Stags pressure, they won a corner. Hamshaw’s inswinging corner very nearly went directly in, but a flying full length save by keeper Barnes & out for another corner, which came to nothing. The outstanding D’Laryea set Hamshaw free on the left hand side of the area, in the 56th minute, whose shot fizzed narrowly wide with the keeper beaten. In the 63rd minute, an outstanding tackle by a Grimsby defender on Mickey Boulding, was adjudged by referee Haywood as a foul. Conlon bent the resulting free kick around the wall, but was easily saved by Barnes. In the 66th minute a Grimsby midfielder volleyed just inches wide of the right hand post with Jason White rooted to his line. A minute later another Grimsby attack, this time down their right wing was thwarted by an amazing diving 2 handed save by Jason White. Billy Dearden made his first substitution in the 70th minute, withdrawing Mickey Boulding & sending on Simon Brown for the last 20 minutes. By this time Stags were being ripped apart by a very attacking Grimsby side. Stags resorted to playing very deep & inviting Grimsby to attack them. In the 73rd minute the Grimsby left back was left in acres of space in the Stags half & carried the ball forward & unleashed a wicked shot from 25 yards out & flashed narrowly wide with White diving full length. In the 75th minute Gritton made way for the returning Danny Reet. Conlon was struggling to keep up with the pace of the game & was clearly not match fit & was very surprised that he didn’t make way for Reet instead of match fit Gritton. In the 80th minute Grimsby made their 1st & only substitution sending on Danny North for Paterson. This proved to be an inspired substitution by Alan Buckley, in the 83rd minute with Stags trying to chase the game. North was set free on the half way line & expertly carried the ball at pace & drilled a low shot into the bottom left hand corner of Jason White’s net, to spark jubilant goal celebrations by both players & fans alike. Grimsby fully deserved to be leading the game after a very poor & inept performance by the Stags in the 2nd half. The only player, who came out with any credit was the outstanding Jonathan D’Laryea. Much to my dismay & amusement the tannoy announcer declared that the Match Sponsors had chosen Matty Hamshaw as their Man of the Match!!! Were they watching the same game as me? I think not!! After 3 minutes of injury time Grimsby easily held on for a well deserved win. I managed to catch up with the infamous & illusive Jamie at the end of the game & got his view on the game.
