INJURY TIME ROBBERY

by Sean the Mad Stag

The Stags headed into yet another Cup Tie, following their midweek disappointment away at Darlington in the Johnstone Paint Trophy.
Manager Peter Shirtliff made quite a few changes to his starting line up. Out of the squad altogether went Asa Charlton (due to being cup tied), Rory Boulding and young Chris Wood, with Nathan Arnold, Chris Beardsley and Callum Lloyd dropping to the bench. In came Gareth Jelleyman at left back, Giles Coke in central midfield, Matty Hamshaw on the right wing and Captain Richie Barker up front.

Donny kicked off attacking the Quarry Lane end. Stags were up and at Rovers from the very start. The game was fast flowing and Stags penned Rovers in their own half for the first few minutes. Stags were playing with pride and passion and seemed to be putting recent poor performance at Rochdale behind them.

Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock was the first player to get on shot on target in the 6th minute, which was easily dealt with Carl Muggleton.

Stags took the game to Doncaster Rovers but they lacked penetration in the final 3rd of the pitch.

Rovers striker Mark McCammon was proving to be a major handful to the Stags backline, with his pace and physique, but was met by stout defending from Alex John-Baptiste & Hjelde on more than one occasion. A quick break from Hamshaw, following a McCammon run, left Giles Coke to fire a dipping shot from 20 yards out and just over the bar.

In the 22nd minute the ball broke through to McCammon again in the Stags penalty area, but was dealt with brilliantly by Baptiste. The ball was played quickly down field and played into the Rovers penalty area where one of their defenders handled it. Referee Russell pointed straight to the spot, which was met by boos from the away supporters. Up stepped Richie Barker, who fired the ball right footed into the bottom left hand corner of the net, with keeper Smith guessing the right way, but unable to stop it. GOAL!!!!!!!!!! 1 NIL to the Super Stags, just what they deserved from all the play they had up to this point.

All game the Stags fans in the Quarry Lane Stand were in great voice and getting right behind the Stags.

Imagine my surprise and much to my amusement when I could see a row of Doncaster Rovers fans in red T shirts with the letters H-A-S-L-A-M O-U-T!!! printed on them.

Following the goal Rovers upped a gear and started to attack more. McCammon was fouled by Buxton on the halfway line, but referee Russell waved play on, Guy weaved his way into the Stags penalty box and seemed to be brought down by Baptiste, which was turned down by the referee. Before, Muggleton could take the resulting goal kick, the referee booked Buxton for the earlier foul on McCammon.

A few minutes later Guy had another penalty appeal turned down after he had broken into the Stags penalty area and went down under a Hjelde challenge.

Just before half time Donny forced a corner on their left. The ball was played and flicked on by Forte the Stags defence left it for each other, resulting in the ball hitting the right hand post and was then smothered by a relieved Muggleton.

HALF TIME MANSFIELD TOWN 1 DONCASTER ROVERS 0

Following an excellent performance in the first half Stags kicked off the 2nd half and immediately attacked the Rovers goal, but the move broke down. A minute later Simon Brown found himself free in the Rovers penalty area only to be crowded out by their defence before he could get his shot away.

A quick throw in from Hamshaw in the 53rd minute was met by a first time right wing cross by Buxton onto the head of Mickey Boulding, who steered his powerful header over the Rovers bar.

Moments later following a desperate lunge in midfield by Giles Coke, who received a booking, Rovers mounted an attack down their right and the ball was played into the Stags penalty area for Guy, who went to ground under a challenge by Jelleyman, but the referee again waved away another penalty appeal.

Soon after, Donny made two quick substitutions. The ball broke to Simon Brown on the Mansfield left and somehow managed to fire in a shot cum cross, which narrowly went wide of Smith’s net.

In the 68th minute Barker very nearly put Stags 2-0 up, when defensive indecisiveness by Donny keeper and central defender allowed, Barker to get in between them and fire a shot from a very acute angle, which went agonisingly across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

In the 73rd minute Danny Reet replaced Simon Brown. Moments later Donny missed an absolute sitter from inside Stags 6 yard area when following a right wing cross was met with a bullet header that flew wide.

Donny fans were getting more and more agitated as the game moved into stoppage time.

Following a quick free kick from Hamshaw, Barker headed narrowly wide.

Donny were piling players forward and didn’t look like scoring until a 20 yard deflected shot by Brian Stock finally beat Muggleton and sent the Donny fans wild behind the goal.

The game ended in a draw and a replay will be needed to determine who will go into the 3rd round draw with the Big Boys.
