The Stags made two changes from the side defeated badly at Walsall last weekend. Out went Coke and Lloyd and in came Reet, starting in attack with Barker, and Dawson, back after suspension. County included three former Stags in their squad, Kevin Pilkington and Junior Mendes started and Tom Curtis was on the bench for the Pies. Premiership referee Dermot Gallagher took charge of the match, the pre-match chat I had with my son about having a good referee at last was, sadly, more than premature.
It was the home side that dominated the early exchanges, with almost the entire match played in front of the visiting supporters in the North Stand. Sheehan had already hit a tame free kick into the wall when, with just 9 minutes gone, the Stags took the lead. Jelleyman's left wing cross was superbly headed back towards goal by Barker and following a defensive mistake Reet was on hand to finish clinically. Barker almost made it two minutes later, following a neat exchange of passing on the Stags left Hamshaw drifted inside and slid Barker through, his shot beat Pilkington but hit the base of the post. But it was two just before the 20 minute mark, Barker's header thudded off the bar, but Reet was on hand to tap the ball home. White was eventually tested by Dudfield, producing a fine save at the strikers feet but straight away it was the Stags and Barker again who were providing the real threat. A long ball from Dawson was headed back by Barker and Hamshaw hit a sweet half volley which flew inches over the bar with Pilkington beaten. The striker then headed a great Hamshaw cross wide just moments before the first controversial refereeing decision of the afternoon. Reet did well to out-muscle White some 30 yards from goal, he raced through and blasted the ball past Pilkington only to look back in disbelief as Gallagher had penalised the young Stags striker for a foul. Half Time 2-0 The Pies, absolutely outplayed in the first half, made two changes at half time, Mendes and Somner replaced by N'Toya and Hunt. This did make an early difference to the game, with County for the first time threatening the Stags goal but Jason White remained untested. As the half wore on, the Stags began to press again and two County players were booked within a minute for rash challenges. However, it was an inoccuous challenge that was to change the course of the match. Already booked for a late challenge in the first half, Hamshaw received a second yellow card for a "foul" in the second half. Indeed, the referee hadn't even given a free kick for the "offence" and at first brandished just a yellow. However, Gallagher eventually managed to remember booking Hamshaw in the 1st half and produced the red. I am certain that had Gallagher, usually such a good referee, realised Hamshaw had already been booked, then a quick word of warning would have been given. This changed the entire pattern of the game, for the first time the Stags were on the back foot, conceding over a dozen corners and lots of other set pieces. County pulled one back with still 20 minutes remaining, Edwards firing home from close range after the Stags defence failed to clear a right wing corner. It was all County and just as Stags fans thought the home side might hang on, 4 minutes from time they equalised, Hunt heading a left wing corner back across goal for Dudfield to head into the bottom corner. However, there was still time for the Stags to create one more chance, Coke worked his position well and fired a superb shot from 20 yards which flew just past the post. A very disappointing point for the Stags after dominating the game for an hour. The disallowed Reet goal and the extremely harsh sending off of Hamshaw show that the Stags luck is most definitely not taking a turn for the better, both looked very poor decisions and both were absolutely crucial in allowing a dreadful County side back into the game. Good performances from Buxton, Hjelde and Baptiste when we were under pressure and Barker looked back to his best, setting both Reet goals up and creating other chances. Dawson was superb in the middle of the park but he was just shaded for Man of the Match by Danny Reet, who took his goals well, should have had a hat-trick and has certainly answered the questions his manager has asked of him.
