STAGS ANNIHILATE BARNET

Martin Shaw at Field Mill

Mansfield Town put in a superb performance at Field Mill this afternoon to annihilate Barnet 4-0. In fact it’s no exaggeration to say that it could have been double figures. Simon Brown earned a penalty which barker converted in the first half, then Brown scored the second to cap a display which was clearly the best by any Stags player this season. Adam Rundle added a third and Barker netted the fourth. The win took the Stags off the foot of the table and just one place behind the Londoners. On the evidence of today, Barnet look more like a side to go down to the Conference, not the Stags.

Caretaker boss Peter Shirtliff made one change from the side that lost at Carlisle with new signing Jonathan D'Laryea replacing Dawson in midfield.

Mansfield were on top from the start and took the lead after 10 minutes. A neat interchange between Stags players saw Rundle put Brown through. Brown ran towards the byeline inside the penalty area and was bundled over by King. It was a clear foul for a penalty and King was booked. Since Brown was not in a goal-scoring opportunity, the yellow card was the right decision. Barker took the penalty and blasted it down the middle. Tynan got a hand to it but such was the venom of the kick that the keeper couldn’t keep it out.

Within two minutes Brown should have scored himself. More superb passing saw Rundle put Brown through but this time Brown shot into the near side-netting when he should have gone for the far-post. On 21 minutes, Barker surged into the box and rounded Tynan, but ended up with too tight an angle and his shot could never threaten the goal. Within seconds Uhlenbeek crossed from the right and Rundle met it with a volley straight at Tynan. Three minutes after that the Stags took a clever free kick as a series of short passes allowed Rundle a clear sight of goal but he shot past the right post.

The Stags remained completely on top, but the next glorious chance didn’t arrive until 42 minutes, as the Stags had 2 chances in ten seconds. First Brown had a shot well saved by Tynan, but then Uhlenbeek sent the rebound goalwards and again Tynan did well to keep it out. On the stroke of half time, there was more superb play by Mansfield as Rundle put Jelleyman into a good position on the byeline where he put an excellent cross which Brown met with a header but it wasn’t powerful enough and Tynan dived to his left to make the save.

It was a wonderful first half from Mansfield and one that should have seen them three or four goals to the good. Barnet were particularly poor and surely could be as bad in the second half.

Half time 1-0

The first action of the second half saw Uhlenbeek booked for diving as he went down on the byeline 3 yards outside the box. It obviously was a foul and, anyway, who would be stupid enough to dive in a position where a free-kick would be next to useless?

On 50 minutes Barnet mustered their first meaningful chance of the game as Sinclair shot wide.

Barnet then had a good spell for 10 minutes but as I said during the StagsWorld commentary at the time, in every game no matter had badly a team is playing, they always have one good spell, and this was it.

But the Stags sealed the game on 65 minutes and what a fine goal it was. Uhlenbeek broke down the right but his pass to Brown was intercepted. However Coke won the ball back and played the ball back to Uhlenbeek who skipped forward before crossing low and hard into the box where Brown met it first time with his right boot to sweep it past Tynan at the near post.

On 68 minutes it was 3-0. A short corner found it’s way to Rundle on the left side of the penalty area. Rundle steadied himself and sent a right-footed shot straight through Tynan’s legs.

Barnet had a goal disallowed when a corner went straight into the net, but luckily for the static Kevin Pressman, the referee had spotted something untoward, and then Barnet sub Norville, a lookalike of Didier Drogba, headed wide from three yards when it looked easier to score.

But that was it for the appalling visitors and Barker added the richly deserved fourth Mansfield goal on 83 minutes. Coke put the Stags striker through, he took the ball around Tynan and from a tight angle rolled the ball into the empty net.

On 86 minutes, sub Adrian Littlejohn had the easiest of chances to open his goalscoring account, but showed why his goalscoring record is so poor throughout his career. He picked up a backpass from Lee and rounded Tynan but incredibly shot wide of the empty net. Definitely one for Soccer AM to show.

Barker missed a chance to complete his hat-track on 88 minutes. Tynan had to head away a ridiculous backpass, and it fell to Barker 30 yards out, but he scuffed his shot well wide.

The Stags received a rousing ovation from the fans at the end of the game, and both Brown and Uhlenbeek received standing ovations when they were substituted.

Barnet meanwhile were kept on the pitch by manager Paul Fairclough for 25 minutes with all sorts of finger pointing going on and players appearing to blame each other. Don’t bet against the Bees mounting a consolidated bid for relegation. They were bad. But the Stags were quite outstanding.

Man of the Match: Simon Brown

Report by: Martin Shaw at Field Mill

Line Up:
Pressman 6 Good handling though lucky to escape when rooted to his line from a couple of corners.
Buxton 7 Good game at right back.
Baptiste 8 Had Grazioli in his back pocket. Commanding the air.
Hjelde 7 Played well. Looks a class act now, after a dodgy first few games.
Jelleyman 7 Played well, and one outstanding cross from the byeline in the first half.
Uhlenbeek 9 Showed good pace, but more importantly made quality crosses all afternoon.
D’Laryea 8 Quiet start, but showed some excellent touches and got better and better.
Coke 8 Won some crunching tackles in midfield and showed good distribution.
Rundle 7 Good game, playing slightly deeper than normal.
Brown 9.5 The best performance by a Stags player this season in my opinion. Ran Barnet completely ragged. Won the penalty, and scored a good goal.
Barker 8 Back to his best; powerful penalty and took his goal well. Should have had a hat-trick.
Sub Line Up:
Littlejohn (for Brown, 80) 5 Appalling miss in a one-on-one with Tynan, and gave the ball away a couple of times.
Dawson (for Uhlenbeek, 86) --
Subs Not Used: White, Birchall, Jacobs.
Opposition Line Up:
Tynan, Hendon, King (Batt 72), Charles, Yakubu, Bailey (Norville 76), Lee, Sinclair, Graham (Hatch 45), Soares, Grazioli. Subs Not Used: Flitney, Strevens.
Referee:
C Boyeson (E Yorkshire) 6 Should have sent Bailey off but got most other things right.
