The Stags turned in a superb 120 minutes display in the Carling Cup against Championship side Stoke City and fully deserved to progress to the 2nd Round after winning the tie on penalties. The Stags made several changes to the side beaten at Peterborough. In came Jason Talbot for his first start of the season, Chris Beardsley, Gus Uhlenbeek, Giles Coke and Alex John-Baptiste back again after suspension. Stoke made just one change from the side which played in the Championship game at the weekend with Harper replacing Chadwick on the wing.

The Stags almost made the perfect start, a corner from the right wasn't cleared and the ball fell to Day, 8 yards out, but his low shot was gratefully grabbed by Simonsen. However, despite enjoying the better of the opening exchanges, the Stags fell behind on 11 minutes to a penalty conceded by Jason White, following a poor back-header by the otherwise outstanding Jake Buxton. White escaped punishment, probably due to the fact Sidibe's touch which took the ball past him was too heavy and would have gone out of play anyway. Brammer converted the spot kick. The Stags deservedly drew level on 16 minutes with a great goal from Jelleyman, a diving header following a pinpoint cross from Baptiste. Just a couple of minutes later Jelleyman almost added his second, a free kick on the right after a foul on Uhlenbeek saw the Stags full-back, playing in a midfield role, fire the ball just over the bar. Beardsley had the last Stags chance of the half, heading a deep cross straight at Simonsen.

Half-Time 1-1

Stoke were first to attack in the second half, Harper wriggling his way through the Stags defence only to screw his shot well wide. However, it was the Stags who continued to control possession for long spells in the 2nd half and the best chances of the half fell to the home side. Baptiste, having a good game in the centre of midfield, showed a little lack of prowess in front of goal as just 10 yards out he had two attempts to latch onto an Uhlenbeek cross, his first attempt saw him miss the ball, his second saw him fire well wide. Dawson replaced Coke on 66 minutes, whilst three minutes later Brown replaced Beardsley. The last 15 minutes were full of near misses, excellent crosses from both Brown and Rundle just evaded a Stags attacker.

Full-Time 1-1

The Stags best chance of extra-time fell to Brown. Uhlenbeek hit an inch perfect through ball, Brown easily outpaced the Stoke defence but his shot, which beat Simonson, hit the near post. Birchall replaced Talbot on 106 minutes with Jelleyman reverting back to full-back. It was the Stags sub who had the final attempt on goal of the 120 minutes, firing a low shot from the left into the side netting. So to penalties, Barker blasted the ball home whilst Brammer's kick hit the bar (1-0), Day then fired his penalty home followed by White brilliantly saving Hoefkins kick (2-0), Jelleyman confidently put away his kick and Duberry blasted the ball over the bar - all over, 3-0 to the Stags

This was an excellent performance against a strong Stoke side. Positives all over the pitch but none more so than Gus Uhlenbeek who certainly pressed a claim for a place in the side with an excellent display on the right.
